The planet Ropor was only thirty-six hours away from Tel’oran, which was plenty of time for the bad guys to prepare for his arrival. If they would be waiting for him at all. Although Siri and he were attacked, there was still no way for Salwan’s people to know for sure what the pair had learned. Everyone who had direct contact with them was dead. But if it were Adam, he would be figuring the worst. And now the Human had left the planet. He could only be going to one place. The planet Ropor.

“Beth, what can you tell me about Salwan Saif and the planet Ropor?”

Adam could have just as easily referenced the Galactic Library himself, but Beth could do it much faster while simultaneously researching multiple avenues of inquiry, often things he would have never thought about.

“Salwan Saif is a business being of considerable wealth and influence, not only on the planet Roper, but throughout much of the Darius Branch of the Orion Spur,” the pleasant female voice of his ship’s A.I. recited. “I have volumes of data relating to over two hundred business entities under his direction, with legal and financial documents. As you would assume, they appear to all be in order since he has had no probes by governmental entities beyond the normal nuisance cases.”

“Almost too clean,” Adam said.

“Precisely,” Beth agreed. “That is why there is also extensive information about his purported criminal activities. Although hundreds of his subordinates have been found guilty of various crimes, Salwan Saif has never faced prosecution himself. That is standard for people of his status.”

“What are some of these criminal activities he’s suspected of being involved in?”

Adam was seated in the pilot seat of the Arieel, drinking a Diet Pepsi and staring idly out the front viewport at the computer-generated image outside. At his current speed—and traveling within the event horizon of millions of microscopic black holes—the area forward of the Arieel was only a single point of light, while all around the ship there was utter darkness, as no light could catch up to the speeding starship. But Beth knew what space outside would look like to an outside observer and she created a perfect representation of steaking stars and passing nebula in all the glorious colors of the universe. Mentally, an image like this was more comforting for sentient beings, so nearly all ships traveled in this mode.

“Salwan Saif’s primary activities deals in the theft and resale of fuel pods, operating a multi-world network of thieves as well as an active marketplace for his merchandise. But that is only part of his operations. This list is three hundred fourteen items long of which he has an interest in. Do you wish to hear the list?”

“No, that’s not necessary,” Adam said. “And his headquarters is on Ropor?”

“It is, although, as expected, he has holdings on one hundred four other worlds. His primary operations are conducted out of a fortified compound sixteen kilometers west of the city of __. He seldom goes into the city.
